Derived from the launch systems developed for ballistic missiles aboard SSBNs [submarine, ballistic missile, nuclear], a VLS forms a scaled-down equivalent for launching cruise missiles such as the Tomahawk, surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), and the standard missile.
